Halo Wars 2 Ultimate Edition

Definitive Edition this week

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, the remastered version of the 2009 real-time strategy game, will be available for individual purchase this Thursday, April 20, publisher Microsoft Studios announced today.
The Definitive Edition, which Microsoft announced during E3 2016, was actually released in mid-December. But until now, it has been available only for people who bought the $79.99 Ultimate Edition of Halo Wars 2. While that sequel didn’t launch until February, Microsoft opened up the Definitive Edition of Halo Wars on Dec. 20 to customers who pre-ordered the Halo Wars 2 Ultimate Edition.

Microsoft will be selling Halo Wars: Definitive Edition for $19.99, so buyers of Halo Wars 2’s Ultimate Edition didn’t save any money — they just got four months of early access. The Definitive Edition will be available on Windows PC and Xbox One; PC gamers can choose to buy the game on Steam or the Windows Store. The Steam version features Steam achievements and a server browser. Because Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, people who purchase it from the Xbox Store or the Windows Store will receive the other version free.

Halo Wars was originally made by the now-defunct Ensemble Studios, the company behind franchises like Age of Empires. The Definitive Edition — which offers improved graphics and additional achievements, and includes all of the game’s add-ons — was developed by Behaviour Interactive and 343 Industries.
